Andy Improves his Conversation Skills

Andy has participated in PTI since 2008 and initially joined to meet new people through events in the community.  He was referred by a long-time PTI participant.  He says, “I’ve made a lot of friends in Pathways.  That’s what I like most about Pathways: the opportunity to meet new people.”

Andy has improved his ability to maintain discussions through the larger Social Growth events and the smaller Social Focus program.  The Social Focus program allows PTI participants to plan smaller events with a Program Manager or Specialist and invite people of their choosing.  Andy said, “small group activities give everyone a chance to talk without being rushed.”

Andy is a cashier at Walgreens and has many opportunities everyday to talk to customers.  They compliment him on his friendly service.  In the future, Andy said, “I’d like to have my own place.  I’d like to find work that allows me to use even more skills.  I’d like to have many more friends of all ages.”  Andy has more confidence making connections with others; he said, “I stay on topic better and I can keep a conversation going longer.  I’ve learned to find out what interests other people.”  To new participants at PTI, Andy suggests, “Be as active as you can.  Try new events.”
